Why should you consider business intelligence(BI)?
Businesses large or small all have speciality functions. Examples would be finance, customer care, operations. Each department tends to collect data relevant to departmental needs and each has a tendency towards a silo mentality. The result, information generated by the department may be considered proprietary by the department. Even if the sharing of information, benefits the whole business the information remains within the department. This is a human trait that some of us feel unable to override. The primary reason, information is power. The result, managers lack an accurate overview of the business. Consequently, some business decisions, may prove to be somewhat detrimental to the overall health of the business.
Think of this analogy. You have a map (a business plan). You give each department a section of the map. You wish them all well, and add you look forward to seeing them all, at journeys end. Using the map each silo makes their own decisions as to the best route to take and each makes their best guess as to what obstacles lies ahead of them for example new technology, customer expectations, new competitors, new business models.
What’s the chance everyone reaches the destination at the same time?
You may be thinking, the is analogy, is a silly one. So, I’d like to make a suggestion. Ask stakeholders to think of a word or phrase to describe your organisation. Then ask people to define the word or phrase.
A real world example. Professor Kathy Willis, Director of Science, Kew Gardens (Life Scientific BBC Radio 4, 12/11/2015), asked her staff this very question. She got 176 different interpretations of Kew’s mission, (purpose). It’s not surprising. Humans all develop their own individual understanding (model) of how the world works. So it’s only natural for individuals to interpret the same thing differently. The problem is when humans need to collaborate individuals need to agree a set of definitions for intentions, if objectives are to be realised.
So how can BI help managers to keep the business on course.
Business intelligence gives you an evidence based insight as to what’s happening across the organisation, for example business architecture, finance, technology, applications, investments, information, goals and strategy. The objective being to deliver business context, (actionable information), which you can use during your expedition to steer stakeholders towards a successful journeys end.
Think of business intelligence as a GPS system. GPS gives you information about traffic, weather, road works, favourable alternative routes, plus recommendation as to your best route. BI seeks to provide you with the same information as GPS system.
You may ask how?
BI seeks to gather data across your business then collate and present the information in such a way departments and you are empowered to make the best decisions to reach your desired destination.
Getting started is simple. You already have the data. The problem is the data, is locked into disconnected departmental silos. BI seeks to break down departmental silos natural inclination to withhold data by gathering the data and organising the presentation of information along the needs of the dimensions of your business.
Why is BI so important in to today’s world?
The old way of making decisions won’t fit with the way inventive competitors’ business models are changing to fit rapidly evolving customer expectations. If your stakeholders lose confidence your journey ends. So, you can decide right now, whether your journey slows, ends or continues towards a profitable future.
